| Imagine a home which would
think for you. One which could check for problems while you were out -
detecting intruders, shutting off the gas supply in the event of a leak,
turning the lights on and off when you went on holiday.
And while you were at home, it could turn on all the lights as you entered
a room; or automatically light your way to the bathroom with low-level
nightlights when you got up in the night.
With the new Intelligent Home Control system from NDR Systems, all this
and much more is possible.
IHC: the intelligent choice
The concept of a 'smart home' which can produce hot meals and clean itself
has been around for decades. However, unlike these notions of fantasy,
IHC is firmly grounded in reality. It provides a range of practical functions,
not sci-fi gadgetry. Rather like power steering, the technology is unobtrusive
yet quietly revolutionary.
You can't see it, but you can feel the benefits; working discreetly in
the background to make life easier. And although highly sophisticated,
it remains simple to set, adjust and re-set according to the user's needs.

Building in a real advantage
For homebuilders and property developers, IHC delivers a unique differential
to drive sales. It offers buyers a package of benefits unlike any other,
adding value, comfort and security to their purchase.
For secure housing tenants, IHC means more options, more flexibility and
for those with disabilities, a higher degree of independence.
And in Denmark, where the system was developed, its success is now self-evident;
85% of those new homes suitable for installation have had IHC fitted,
a figure which represents 40% of the total new homes market.
Smart yet simple
Smart homes have been around for some time but only for the privileged
few. Complex technology, and an inability to produce to economies of scale,
meant that costs were prohibitively expensive.
However, IHC is the first central intelligence system in which all functions
are controlled from a simple centralised hub, making the system accessible,
flexible and affordable.
Inputs and outputs are connected to a central controller loaded with all
the necessary programming. Windows drag-and-drop software is used to create
the required settings, which means that any changes required in the future
are easily carried out via a PC. Should the mains power be cut, all settings
are protected by a battery-powered back-up.

Security
IHC can also provide the added comfort of protection from intruders,
with a highly sophisticated package of devices.
A range of new intelligent PIRs (passive infra red)can detect not
just movement but will distinguish between an intruder and the family
pet. Magnetic contacts can trigger alarms if doors or windows have
been opened, and can be used to provide a 'status check' of all
doors and windows before going away.
|
With 'presence simulation', the system can also be
used to dissuade intruders from entering in the first place - by
drawing curtains, adjusting the blinds, and periodically turning
lights on and off to make it look as though someone is at home.
Meanwhile sensors which detect a presence on the driveway can also
provide a reassuring welcome for the home owner, triggering outside
and hall lights.
|
Movement sensor: Triggers
an alarm when movement is registered in a room. should be mounted
at points that must be passed to access the rest of the house, and
at lacations that are likly to be searched for valuables.
|
Magnetic contact set:
Triggers an alarm if doors or windows are opened.
|
Blind and curtain control:
Set the curtains or blinds to close automatically after dark, to
avoid the home looking unoccupied. Blinds can also be set to adjust
themselves automatically during the day when they detect sunlight.
|

Intruder detection: Sophisticated
sensors can detect different body masses - which means, importantly, they
reconise the difference between a cat and an intruder. In the event of
a break-in, a high-pitched tone sounds and all the lights in the house
can flash on and off putting pressure on the thief to leave. Meanwhile
outside, an alarm sounds an motion detectors can turn on external lights
to draw attention to the unwellcome visitor.
Voice modem: Relays an alarm
signal to selected phone numbers - including a security alarm centre if
applicable.

Control
IHC provides a huge range of options for personal controls which enhance
both comfort and safety.
Lights, heating and other utilities can be set to turn on or off as
the user requires, either automatically or at the touch of a single
switch, individually or in various combinations, in a single room
or all around the home.
Thermostatic controls can prevent burst pipes while you're away; automatic
night-lighting guides guests safely to and from the bathroom; one-touch
controls save valuable time as you're leaving the house; and lights
which turn off automatically are ideal for lulling children to sleep
and for preventing wasted electricity. One-touch
control
The press of a single switch turns on or off all lights; a specific
group of lights; or a combination of lights and appliances according
to your personal needs.
|
Automatic turn on/off
Lights and/or appliances turn on automatically when movement is registered
- for example, when you walk in to a room. This function provides
added reassurance for the elderly, and is particularly useful for
the disabled. Night lights
An activated PIR turns on an illuminated path to guide you safely
to the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen at night. Ideal for children or
the elderly. The lights turn off again automatically after a set period
of time. Dimming
Create fixed illumination levels and lighting combinations for 'TV
mode', 'relaxation mode' or 'reading mode', which are activated with
the touch of a single button.
|
Comfort light
At the press of a switch the bedroom light can be dimmed to help children
fall asleep. The light turns off automatically after a specified time.
Holiday mode
At the press of a switch you can turn off lighting, heating and selected
appliances, shut off the water supply and switch the home to security
mode. At the same time you can check whether all windows and doors
are shut. Temperature control
Automatically turn down the temperature of your heating in one room,
several rooms, or specified zones of the house. Choose from two options:
'frost protection', for low-level heating in empty rooms or to prevent
burst pipes while you are away; and 'night reduction', to lower the
temperature by around 5°C overnight.

WHY USE C-BUS?
- C-Bus is a proven system, whose reliability has been demonstrated
in projects throughout the world including, Australia, Malaysia, Japan,
United Kingdom, South Africa and China.
- C-Bus core protocol is based on the internationally recognized ISO,
7 layer communications model, ensuring the C-Bus communications are
extremely robust and reliable.
- C-Bus has been designed to meet Australian and European directives
and standards for electrical safety and EMC compliance.
- C-Bus is extremely simple to document at the project design stage.
Switching and control circuits need not be decided until the time of
commissioning, and changes can be made at any time without altering
the schematics.
- C-Bus can control any type or size of load, whether digital or analogue.
- A single C-Bus cable connection can control an unlimited number of
devices. For example, the main switch panel in a typical building could
contain 200 switches and 100 dimmers (or even more), yet only one C-Bus
twisted pair cable would be wired to the switch panel.
- Ultimate flexibility in switching and control. Functions can be changed,
added, removed, moved or reprogrammed, at any time or at any position
on the network, without any cumbersome hard wiring.
- Extra Output Units can be added at any time. The only wiring that
is required is to connect the mains supply to the devices and connect
them to any point on the C-Bus network.
- C-Bus is simple to install and commission. Accredited C-Bus installers
are available all through Asia and other regions. Clipsal also offers
training and certification to persons involved in C-Bus installations.
- C-Bus does not require a centralized computer or any other controller,
however a PC can be used to add more features, if desired. This provides
considerable cost, flexibility and reliability advantages over other
systems.
